Basket Case
by
Carl Hiaasen
Once
a crackerjack investigative reporter, Jack Tagger, demoted for
insulting his publisher at a board meeting, now writes obits
for a Florida daily. Assigned to write an obituary for one James
Stomati, Jack learns that the deceased is none other than Jimmy
Stoma, lead singer for Jimmy and the Slut Puppies, a former
rock group of which Jack was a fan.
Against
his editor's wishes, Jack pursues an investigation into the
accident that killed Jimmy Stoma. As he delves deeper into suspicious
circumstances surrounding Jimmy's death, key evidence is destroyed,
and two of the remaining three members of the Slut Puppies meet
untimely deaths.
When
he discovers a possible motive for murder and Jimmy's sister
goes missing, Jack, already a pawn in someone else's game, conceives
a daring plan to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, while his
life and his career hang in the balance.
Dark
humor abounds in Basket
Case, proving that stories of serious human failings
like greed and corruption can be told in seriously funny ways.
From beginning to end, Hiaasen deftly weaves a captivating tale
that's sure to please mystery fans that love a good laugh as
much as a good mystery.
