Petey's Fiction Review

Anonymous Lawyer

by Jeremy Blachman

He's wealthy, he's brilliant, he wields his power, not too wisely, with an iron hand. He's Anonymous Lawyer, husband of Anonymous Wife, father of Anonymous Daughter and Anonymous Son, uncle of Anonymous Niece, and friend of no one. He's an egocentric megalomaniac whose only goal is to become chairman of the firm.

In this cleverly contrived, wickedly perceptive, seriously funny debut novel, author and master of satire Jeremy Blachman uses a series of blog posts and e-mail exchanges to advance the story of Anonymous Lawyer, a hiring partner in an anonymous-but-high-profile West Coast corporate law firm.

Possessed of a strong work ethic (for other people) and a powerful sense of loyalty to the firm (for other people), Anonymous Lawyer has neither the time nor the desire to pursue personal relationships. Abusing his authority, delegating tasks to associates and summer interns and posting to his blog (anonymously, of course) consumes most of his time.

He seems to hate just about everybody with equal passion, with the possible exceptions of Anonymous Niece, Anonymous Son, and The Musician. He reviles The Jerk, has no use for The Suck-Up, and is disdainful of The New Chairman, The Tax Guy, The Chicago Guy, The Bombshell, and The Girl Who Dresses Like A Slut. He barely tolerates Anonymous Wife. What Anonymous Lawyer needs is a way to vent his frustrations, reveal his dreams and express his desires. Hence, his blog at www.anonymouslawyer.blogspot.com, where he freely makes disparaging comments about his company and his colleagues.

When someone inside the firm discovers his identity, Anonymous Lawyer finds an unlikely ally. Together, they hatch a plan to derail The Jerk's career and change their own fortunes within the firm. It's a plan that succeeds beyond their expectations or their abilities to foretell.

Jeremy Blachman wields cutting-edge satire like a scimitar to expose the corruption that gnaws at the heart of corporate law. The humor is sometimes brutal, but always on target. Anonymous Lawyer is a great, fun read, and it's destined to be one of the most widely read and most talked-about novels of the year.

Jeremy Blachman, a recent Harvard Law School graduate, authors a popular blog called Anonymous Lawyer (www.anonymouslawyer.blogspot.com), which was profiled in The New York Times. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
